Strut Top Bearing / Strut Support Bearing

I'm hoping you guys can help me here.

Had my Pinin a few weeks now, it's a 3 door Attivo II with the 1.8 MPI engine, and completely standard, because I don't need to modify it for my use. I'm getting clunking noises from the front end when turning, especially at low speed and in reverse, and mainly on the left.

I had the springs replaced along with other parts on the front, but apparently it needs new strut top bearings / strut support bearings. I have searched high and bloody low for the correct item, but the only part that has come up is the Monroe MK245, but that appears to be for the Carisma, Colt V, Lancer V1, and Space Star, could it also fit the Pinin? Or does someone have a part number for the item.

I've spent hours searching forums, and parts websites, any help would be greatly appreciated.

FEBEST

Check ebay - Febest has them.

Some folks have reported bad experiences with Febest products (sway bar end links), so far, I have their strut mounts, ball joints, rack ends, and a variety of rubber bushes and no complaints.

That "clunk", in my opinion is unlikely to be the strut mount - not if it's only when turning - take a closer look at the ball joints.  The strut mount supports the entire weight of the front end, and because it is a bonded rubber mount, would have to be literally falling apart before it starts to "clunk", you might get a light rattle if the bearing is shot, but that would be it.

When I redid my front end, I could not find mounts, and reused the originals, even though I knew the bearings were gone - one reason being that in normal operation the bearing was not supporting a constantly rotating shaft, the strut assembly rotates no more than 90* and only when the vehicle is turning a corner, when I found that Febest had the mounts, I replaced them, more for peace of mind tha anything else.

Thanks for the advice.The

Thanks for the advice.

The mate who fitted the springs etc. said it was the bearing and that the mount should be changed too, something about the spring not turning for a bit and then jumping. I'm pretty illiterate when it comes to fixing cars and he does jobs for me at mates rates.

I'll go look for Febest on ebay though.

ETA, thanks to your help I found the correct OEM part number which has led to a full parts diagram, I actually know what I need now. yes

spring not turning

What you described could very well be because your friend did assembled your strut back in properly. You can check yourself, or ask him too. The top and lower plate of the spring have a hole each, those hole need to line up....if they don't line up makes the spring not turning and jumping as you described. If the noise (of the spring jumping) wasn't here before that could comfirm this.

Happy io

Thank you for the replies

Thank you for the replies gentlemen, all good information I'll pass on. I haven't had a chance to have a look properly myself yet, but I now have a suspicion a previous owner may have fitted the wrong parts. I'll speak to my friend tomorrow about it and see what he says.

Just as an update, it appears

Just as an update, it appears a previous owner has fitted the wrong parts, I've found a UK supplier and all the correct parts are now on order.

I'm not sure if this is posted anywhere on the site, I haven't found it yet, but I think this is a complete parts list, and diagrams, for the european MPI engine Pinin/IO.
