Strut spacers - group buy anyone?

I'm getting a pair of 25mm thick spacers made up that look like this:

Inside diameter is 80mm (same diameter as the strut tower hole)  - I'm going to weld in a section of 80mm outside diameter pipe that will stick up past the spacer into the strut tower mount hole. Without this all the lateral forces would be on the bolts - not good.

Outside diameter 130mm

Bolt holes 8mm, equally spaced at 91mm centres. You would need to knock out the press fitted ones as they're not long enough, replace with high tensile 50mm bolts.

A mate of mine works for an engineering shop in Auckland that has laser and water jet cutting machinery http://www.hsmeng.co.nz/profile-cutting/. I've asked him for a price for doing more than one in case anyone here is interested.

I'll get them in steel because I want to weld the pipe to the spacer and I don't have a tig welder, but they can do aluminium also. I expect they can do other thicknesses also but might cost a bit more to cover the setup of different materials. Any interest let me know as I'm hoping to confirm an order soon - obviously you'll need a price before committing but would be good to know if there's any interest at all.

Just to be clear on the commercial side, Greg is doing this as a favour - they don't normally do small stuff like this. I don't think he's planning on making a profit and nor will I.

Cheers

I am keen as hell to get some lift, so as long as it doesnt cost too much I am in. Although Christmas time is probably the worst time to talk about money....

Interested

I'm keen if the price is right :)

spacers

I haven't had a price yet - I suspect they're flat out trying to get the work done before Xmas and then most manufacturing closes down for two weeks, so it will be a while before I have any news on this I'm afraid. Maybe we can get a few more folk interested in the meantime...

Design

If these are going to be a straight bolt through sandwiched between the strut top and the strut, unless you take the angle into account it could move the strut slightly out and throw off the alignment.

However i'm keen!

Ktm, how did you find your spacers affect the alignment?

Alignment

Ive been scratching my head over this - my guess is you might get a fraction of a degree positive camber change out of them but it's got to be pretty minimal doesn't it?

Hi guys.

My camber ended up 1 deg +, with 30 mm spacers.

No issues with alignment or caster.

I opted for welding plates and flared some pipe.

Standard bolts remain on strut tops.

Cheers.

KTM's spacers

KTM, I'm not sure I understand how yours are made - you say you're using the standard bolts but they aren't long enough to go through 30mm spacers, so I'm imagining yours must be something like this design?

Thats pretty much exactly how

Thats pretty much exactly how i made mine. but i just knocked mine up with the drill press, angle grinder and welder.

No room for welding on the inside tho, not sure but it almost looks like those welds are taking all the verticle load of the car? (the  flange would slip down over the pipe if the welds were not there?) I Dont like that!

Similar to these.

As Glen said I wouldn't rely on small welds alone.

Where these aren't welded you may (read will) get rapid fatigue across the flanges & around the welds, caused by vibration etc.

Mine have heavier flanges, more meat as they are the full diameter not triangulated & locate the strut to the body as original.

Equally important they are fully welded both sides with full penetration.

Cheers.

25mm spacers - any orders?

I have some pricing for the spacers - note this is for 2 x 130mm discs of 25mm thick mild steel cut to the shape in the pic at the top of this thread with an 80mm centre hole and 3 bolt holes. You will need to weld in a short section of 80mm OD pipe to keep the strut securely centred in the tower. I'm going to do this part myself so haven't got it included in the quote.

The price I have been quoted for 1 pair is NZ$92.10 + 15% GST = NZ$105.92

5 pairs is $67.58 (for each pair)

10 pairs is $60.68

I don't know how much they will weigh but if it's 5kg that would cost NZ$45 to send to an AU address, 2kg would cost $24. If there's a number of you in Oz it might be better for me to send one parcel to someone who can forward them on using local mail. So depending on how many are ordered and the actual postage cost you're looking at between NZ$110 to $140 for a pair of discs - in Aussie dollars that's $85 to $110. It might be you can get them done locally for a similar price or not much more - I can send the DWG/DXF file if anyone wants it.

If you want a pair I need to know by next Friday 3rd Feb.

Great work on getting all those prices, but I think it would be easier/cheaper to get them made locally. In any case, my mods are on the back burner for now as I am saving for an overseas trip.

I'm looking forward to seeing your results with these, as I still think this could be the way to go for a simple lift. I'm also interested to see how much the 25mm lifts the car at the wheels - should be more than 25mm I think..?

25mm+ lift?

I suspect you're right about the pricing - doesn't seem likely it will be worth the effort.

Because I've already got 30-odd mm lift from fitting the later strut mounts I won't be able to fit these without dropping the diff at the same time so it will be a while before these go on. I'm thinking 50mm steel box section with sleeves for the bolts to do that - but as has been said elsewhere it might be worth putting a slight angle on them to maintain the diff-propshaft angle.

Regarding lift amount - having the lower strut mount slightly inboard of the hub will mean it's a little more than the spacer thickness I suppose, but only a few mm surely.

front lift

Thanks for the offer, but I will pass on that one. But I am interested to have the DWG/DXF file.

Thanks,

Happy io.

DWG/DXF

Seems DWG/DXF aren't permitted file types to upload into resources, but email me and I'll send them to you - targadon@ <insert a well known google email domain here>

25mm strut mount spacers

Hi,

Here is Tommy from Italy.

I'm trying to do those spacers too but on 50mm tichness.

Maybe is just me having contact with wrong suppliers, BUT here that find somebody thad want cut a metal pieces 135round with 80mm hole, 3 8mm holes... is unavaible..

I just have 1 contact but with automatic machinery and IF i have a base program for the piece it can help, otherwise it will cost me 70€ per hour + machinery and metal costs...

Ending (as average) to about 150/200 Euros each piece.

At these point what can i do?

Love these place, lot of info and tips for the Pinin (in Italy is quite unknow)

Hi Tommy, Cutting these out

Hi Tommy,

Cutting these out of 50mm thick metal would require some special equipment - I'm not surprised you have had expensive quotes.

Might be better to use nylon rather than metal for that thickness.

Keen for these...

Is anyone still reading/listening here?  I'm interested in a set of these spacer if they are still available..

If anyone has the PCD dimension for the bolts and can get my own drawn up and made myself.

Thanks for any help!
