I have been looking at the option of doing a coil over, I am not sure that I want to go that way, just checking my options....

I think that the rating of the original spring is 150 lbs, can anyone confirm if I am correct?

Do you know if the spring on a coil over come in different types/quality ? I have seen some with 2 spring, the main one and a smaller "helper", but I am not sure what it does...dampening, different rating???

Another concern is I  think that the ride will be different,  mainly because the spring is narrower...what do you think??

I'm no expert, but I don't

I'm no expert, but I don't think the diameter of the spring is of significant importance - you can wind a coil on a 3" former and make a 150 lb/inch spring, or you can wind a coil on a 6" former and make a 150 lb/inch spring, you would/should simply need to select the wire diameter and the pitch appropriately.  I have no idea what the stock spring rate is, but I'd like to believe it's more than 150 lb/inch - I just happen to have a new pair of stock springs and they don't compress a full inch if I stand on them - I know, crude, but at least it gives you an idea.

Also - I believe - the reason you see two different coils is a crude attempt to create a "progressive" spring - one in which the spring rate changes as it is loaded - the same effect can be achieved by varying the pitch of the coil as it is being wound.

thanks

I just found this old post from Johnicue (post 28) http://pajerio.com/forum/okthat-sucks-broke-my-strut  I am not saying that it is or isn't correct !!

He said that he found that the Kingspring are 175 lb, the Dobinsons 220 lb and the original one 150 lb.....for me I am still not sure....

A progressive spring could be a good option....even for the rear, if it is possible to fit or get them made...

Thanks,

Happy io

As a person new to this -and

As a person new to this -and an old post I noticed bilstein doing progressive rear springs.

Anyone tried them?

Do they ride and feel well?

Do the pinin 1.8 3dr and 2.0 5dr have same rear set up?

A link or part number would be helpful...

I'm not aware that Bilstein makes anything to fit these, so if you could provide more details ...

The three & five door cars are similar at the rear, but I would expect a difference in spring rate - a stiffer spring for the five doors, as they will be carrying more weight.
