Hi

Bought my 99; 5door IO last year in June 2014.

I realized there was a few thing wrong with it; i had to jump in and start doing my own digging on this fantastic site how to better and understand my new car.

This was my first trip ever in sand at Atlantis Dunes near Cape Town. The car performed like it should. At that stage It was my first time in sand and i did struggle a bit.

However I never got stuck witch was amazing. Everbody that was with me on the trip was very imprest, but i could not do all the dunes they did because of low ground clearance and old tyres with no lift or bash plate.

That was all going to change.

So I started with new coils front and even longer back coils (Mazda Astina fresh from the supplier) and beter shocks with a higer base plate for the fitment of bigger tyres and of course that was follow by new tyres . I want from the standard 215 / 65 / 16 size; to the little bit bigger 215 / 70 / 16's. What improved that was.

Lastly was my bash plate made from mild steel 4.5mm with counter sunk holes and formed to perfection. The foto does not show this. Afterwards I got it Galvinized and fitted it with high tensile steel counter sunk bolts. Will get pick for you.

Will also get pic's of the new tyres.

Still a lot to do, but my (MADIBA's) money ran out; aspecially with the little one running around at 17months old.

Here are a few pic's

Here are 2 pic's of the new tyres and the bash plate. The car is now really performing in the dunes. I only lifted the car by between 40 - 50mm with all my improved parts. What a difference it makes.

Brand new Mazda Astina coil springs for the rear. Gave me along with new shock +-30mm lift in the back. (wow)

When I did the new suspension in front I saw that there was already 2 x 7.5mm steel plates inserted for a front lift. Bargain!!

Here is the new front strut assembly with a higher base plate for a larger tyre fitment and the new coils along with the 15mm spacers and the new rubber shaft boots along with the new strut mounting.

Will update with new foto's of work done and places gone.

Thanks

Bash plate

Hi there

Here is a picture for the bash plate I made out of cardboard. I also have a PDF as send from the engineering shop who did it for me.

Unfortunately I do not know how to upload a PDF. I can understand if the picture of mine is a bit confusing.

The amount on the centre bend was to much and I had to jump on it a bit to open it up.

The holes in the bash plate.  I made them according to my cardboard cut out afterwards as to be as accurate as possible. As this was my fisrt time.

Thanks

Ettienne

Hi Ettienne, nice job done

Hi Ettienne, nice job done there. Just wondering if in the summer won't be necessary to drill some holes in the bash plate to get more airflow?

Could you tell how much was  and where did you buy it? I have the factory tin plate but in the future I'm looking for something a bit more thicker.

Hi Ettienne,

I found a few companies who sell Mazda Astina(323) coil springs in the uk. My question is what model/year shoud I look for? There is a wide range. How much they differ between them?

Regards,

Cristian

Mazda Astina coil springs

Hi there

You must look for the Mazda Astina 1994 - 1998 model. You need the front suspension coil spring to use on the IO's back suspension. (Very important!!)

Mazda 323F   BA platform.

Ford & Mazda parts nr. here in South Africa is 96AM34011BA

On KYB coil sping catalogue you can look for the KYB - Flex   front coil springs nr. RD1430 page

I hope this helps

Let me know if you found them.

Have great day

Ettienne

I was just about to say the

I was just about to say the same thing, the 1st two are for rear and the 3rd listed is for front. $77 each.Be way cheaper to buy from the wreckers if you can find them. I paid $15 each for them and now just have to get the Hilux rear shocks to go with them.
